Campaigners want a 90-year-old law that requires cohabiting parents to re-register the birth of their children if they later marry to be scrapped. The process, which thousands of parents go through every year, is carried out to “legitimate” the birth of a child born to unmarried parents and was introduced in the Legitimacy Act of 1926 by Neville Chamberlain, a vice-president of the National Council for the Unmarried Mother and her Child, to allow illegitimate children to inherit their parents’ estate. The Legitimacy Act 1976 confirmed “legitimation”.
