June 2017 saw family law practitioners from across the globe for the 7th World Congress on Family Law and Children’s Rights in Dublin. Over 600 delegates from 53 countries attended for 4 days of discussion/insight into good practice in family law and the protection of children. Topics including justice and equality, exploitation of children, social media and child participation in proceedings. The protection of children was echoed in numerous talks offered by speakers and the tackling of gender-based discrimination and domestic violence. Access to justice was a hot topic, in particular the impact on access to justice as a result of the legal aid changes, the lack of funding and the considerable time taken by family lawyers to provide their clients with a high level of service.
