Reports issued in the last week of December and the first in January suggested that one could barely open a newspaper without seeing mention of Divorce Day. This is the first working Monday in January, when people are supposedly falling over themselves to issue divorce petitions, with lawyers rubbing their hands in glee. In 2016, the last full year for which we have family court quarterly statistics, 25.6% of divorce petitions were issued between January and March. Although the figures for 2017 will not be available until March, in the first three quarters of the year, 34.1% of petitions were issued between January and March, 32.6% between April and June and 33.3% between July and September. None of this supports the suggestion of a January spike.
