A recurring theme amongst care cases are parental issues of substance misuse and courts around the country piloted a scheme - in some areas known as FDAC - Family Drug and Alcohol Court and in others, PSMC - Parental Substance Misuse Court. When issuing care proceedings, the Local Authority will identify cases suitable for FDAC/PSMC and will then make the referral - not all cases involving substance misuse are suitable.
If accepted, the court list the matter for regular reviews and works towards the return of the child to the family unit if abstinence can be maintained
An injection of money into this area could help reduce the number of cases that are progressed through FDAC/PSMC, which could have the knock on effect of more judicial time for other matters
Local authorities across the country will use £6 million funding to increase access to alcohol treatments, with a focus on helping parents.
